DECENTERING RACE, GENDER AND CLASS – Thinking beyond capitalism and economy

How can we think race, class and gender together when we consider postcapitalist alternatives in the here and now? J.K. Gibson-Graham, among others, have provided rich analyses that encourage us to see how much of our material lives are already not-capitalist. However, gender and race are too often reduced identity politics, and split away from class, so that it remains unclear how, or whether, gender and race are linked to a decentering of capitalism.

A thorough decentering of capitalism requires a more critical examination of the very category of the „economic.“ Doctrines of gender, race, and colonial modernity are built into contemporary notions of the national and world „economies,“ into our perceptions of scale. Equally, the concept of community is oftentimes romanticized in ways that render invisible its connections to markets, commodification and dispossession. Colin Danby will make the case for reworking modernist categoeries of the local and global. S. Charusheela will re-open subjectivity, demonstrating a robust alternative to the opposition of class and identity.
